John W. Leardi
Mr. Leardi represents a diverse range of individual and institutional healthcare clients in both adversarial and transactional matters arising out of their business dealings and contracts. To that end, he regularly handles matters related to: corporate formation, restructuring, and dissolution; commercial contracts and leases; employer/employee relations; restrictive covenants; insurance coverage and reimbursement; business torts; administrative and regulatory compliance; health information technology; and the protection of confidential and proprietary information.
Mr. Leardi’s litigation practice includes a special emphasis on representing healthcare providers in reimbursement disputes, including: post payment audits; overpayment disputes and litigation; insurance fraud investigations and prosecutions; claims for unpaid benefits; and rate-setting appeals.
Because of his knowledge of private insurance reimbursement, Mr. Leardi also serves as co-lead counsel in a number of class action lawsuits aimed at protecting both patients and doctors from the financial abuses of some managed care companies.
Mr. Leardi’s transactional practice is devoted primarily to serving as outside General Counsel to healthcare organizations, including: single-specialty “super-groups,” multi-specialty practice groups, organized delivery systems, licensed facilities, clinical laboratories, durable medical equipment suppliers, group purchasing organizations, healthcare IT companies, and professional associations.
As a result of defending providers facing regulatory scrutiny, Mr. Leardi has also developed a substantial risk management practice, providing baseline compliance auditing to providers of all types and sizes, and assisting in implementing plans of corrective action, when needed.
Mr. Leardi serves as General Counsel to Nemo Health, LLC, a privately-held investment company with a diverse portfolio of health information technology holdings, including electronic health and medical records, medical and/or clinical practice management systems, revenue cycle management, and various other healthcare management solutions.
Mr. Leardi has published numerous articles on healthcare compliance and healthcare reimbursement-related issues, routinely lectures to physicians, residents, and students on medical practice management, is a Fellow and regular contributor to the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM), was named a “Rising Star” in Health Law by New Jersey Monthly in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and a “Super Lawyer” in Health Law by the same publication in 2016.
Prior to co-founding Buttaci Leardi & Werner LLC, Mr. Leardi worked as an Associate Attorney at Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, P.C., in Morristown, NJ. While at Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, P.C., the principal focus of Mr. Leardi’s practice was defending Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Manufacturers in Product Liability and Consumer Fraud Litigation at the trial and appellate levels.
