Part B News Quotes John Leardi on Safeguards for Incorporating AI Into Practice

Buttaci, Leardi & Werner member John Leardi was quoted in an article in Part B News titled “AI Chatbots Create Medico-Legal Trouble; Reduce Your Risk of Harm.” The article, published May 18, discusses a lawsuit filed in Pennsylvania against an artificial intelligence (AI) company on the grounds that its chatbot portrayed itself as a licensed medical doctor.

The editors write that the case is one of the most recent in a series of cases that suggest legal jeopardy for practices that use AI products for patient care even in ways that seem harmless.

Leardi tells Part B News that practitioners need to approach AI the way they would approach any powerful tool — with an understanding of its capabilities and its limitations. He says practitioners should understand the difference between open-source platforms and sophisticated, clinically validated software enhancements. He adds practitioners should use AI to augment their judgment, not replace it.

As for the preemptive measures practices should be taking now, Leardi says, “The good news is that most of what practices need to do isn’t reinventing the wheel — it’s applying the same discipline they should already be bringing to any technology adoption.”
