Part B News Quotes Paul Werner on Government Shutdown, Impact on Providers

Buttaci, Leardi & Werner member Paul Werner was quoted in an article in Part B News titled “Shutdown Slows Claims, Blocks Telehealth; Plan Now, Alert Patients.” The article, published October 8, 2025, discusses the federal government’s shutdown, its impact on Medicare providers, and what they need to know and do.

The shutdown, which ensued when Congress failed to produce a continuing resolution on the budget by October 1, is the tenth such shutdown since 1980. The record for the longest shutdown was 35 days in 2018.

No one knows how long this one will last, but Werner tells Part B News that he believes “the growing political divide in the country makes it harder for people to reach compromise.”

Rhetoric on the shutdown has been hot; President Trump has threatened to illegally withhold back pay from furloughed government workers as a consequence, and Werner notes that Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine), the only Democrat to vote for a Republican-sponsored budget plan, immediately received a primary challenge. Nonetheless, Werner believes this shutdown will end “without too much tortuous delay.”
