Part B News Features Paul Werner on Healthcare Compliance Outlook for 2024
Buttaci, Leardi & Werner partner Paul Werner was quoted in an article in Part B News titled “Expect Compliance Hotspots, G2211 Boom, Telehealth ‘Super Bowl’ and More.” The article, published December 28 as part of the magazine’s annual predictions, provided an outlook of the defining events of 2024 and the critical impact they might have on medical groups.
Werner, who regularly represents physicians and other healthcare providers in civil litigation, criminal investigations and prosecutions, and professional licensing actions, said that while he expects to see continued steps to allow greater flexibility in the use of telehealth, he also predicts an uptick in scrutiny of those services by investigators and prosecutors.
“We went from all the rules to effectively no rules,” Werner said. “And now we’re back in a situation where the payers and Medicare are tired of hemorrhaging money on telehealth expenses. But patients and health care providers have gotten so accustomed to it that there’s this big pushback.”
In his practice, Werner also assists clients with internal investigations into regulatory compliance issues and frequently advises his clients on proactive risk management and regulatory compliance, emphasizing how to proactively avoid payer or regulatory scrutiny in the first place.
